Lage Orchards Condenser Project
Extensive support structure design and engineering for a new steel condenser unit critical to onsite freezer preservation operations.
Lage Orchards, a large privately-owned apple and pear orchard and cold-storage facility located in Hood River, was established in 1876 and employs over 50 people in the region. Lage contracted Bell Design Company to design and build an extensive support structure for a new steel condenser unit.
The Challenge & Scope
The critical component of their onsite freezer preservation operations required massive additional support due to its immense weight. The engineering challenge involved constructing an all-steel framework over an existing exterior CMU wall at one end and hanging it off a concrete wall located at the other end of the building, all while maintaining strict operational constraints.
The Solution
BDC delivered a robust structural engineering solution by designing custom steel legs and an all-steel framework specifically tailored to the unique site constraints. This approach successfully bridged the gap between the CMU wall and the concrete wall, safely supporting the immense weight of the condenser unit and ensuring the continued reliability of Lage Orchards' cold-storage operations.
